GMC: Climate Neutral By 2011
As part of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, signed by GMC in 2007, the College was required to create a plan to achieve climate neutrality. It includes short, medium and long-term goals achievable by 2011, 2020 and 2050 to reduce emissions, replace fossil fuels with cleaner energy sources and purchase minimal offsets to cover emissions not easily avoided or replaced.
GMC’s Sustainability Office, the Campus Sustainability Council and students in ten academic courses developed the GMC’s Climate Action Plan with input from the campus community. Students encouraged GMC to set a target date of 2011, urging GMC to respond quickly to the need to take action on climate change. The plan was filed with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education in September of 2009. Read a two page summary here.
